Liza J. Lee
Original mixed media paintings
From 1997 to 2002, my art referenced Folk Art and Pop Art. Both styles make the most of artistic accessibility, but in different ways. The mechanism of Folk Art represents our collective desire for nature and "Voluntary Simplicity", also the name of the series of my earliest paintings. The process of Pop Art is design-oriented, drawn from media and technologically based. The integration of both methodologies allows me to explore our culture in a way that can also be transformed by new media. The appropriation of the genres parallels the relationship of electrons to the organic nature of the Internet. My first major series is called "Soul Journey". These Sacred Geometry paintings tell the story of our collective electronic evolution: trees symbolize paper-source medium, flowers represent our desire for fluid and changing information and circles convey the interconnectivity of the Internet communication.
Then in 2002, I created the "Regeneration" series, mixed media with recycled materials (paper, fabric and hemp rope). These communicate the need for rapid global restoration. The combined efforts of all individuals recycling are remedial and holistic, resulting in the urgent transformation of our ecosystem. In 2003, the "Vision Quest" pieces mark a transition in my art as it moves towards a more fluid style, while maintaining the inspirational theme since she began painting in 1996. These paintings symbolize the transcendence of time and space.
Since 2007, I have been working on the "Ascension" series, acrylic and mixed media on canvas. These paintings represent the evolution of our collective consciousness to experience the perfection of the present moment and divine peace of now. I've been refining the "Ascension" series, acrylic and mixed media on canvas. These are in the last finishing stages with the encaustic process, a vintage style technique first used by ancient ship builders to preserve artwork with natural beeswax. This technique mixes layers of melted wax and pigment. The finished painting is fused with heat, creating a translucent, yet lasting finish.
This ethereal development is a result of my study of new gothic art for its romantic aesthetic appeal and appreciation for the sublime in nature, as well as reaction against the scientific rationalization of nature. Climate change projections indicate that average global surface temperature will likely rise a further 1.1 to 6.4°C during the twenty-first century, with an irreversible affect on on our environment. These new pieces will be available at the Main Art Drift 2008 at Artistrun Studio & Gallery.
